Milkha Singh, byname the Flying Sikh, Indian track-and-field athlete who became the first Indian male to reach the final of an Olympic athletics event when he placed fourth in the 400-metre race at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

PT Usha is one of India's greatest athletes, often called the country's "queen of track and field" and ‘The Payyoli Express’. At Los Angeles 1984, having breezed into the 400m hurdles final with impressive performances in qualifying, Usha missed out on the bronze medal by just one hundredth of a second.
The gold medal in the men's 10m air rifle at Beijing 2008 was the crowning glory in Abhinav Bindra's stellar sporting career, he was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, as recognition for his efforts in 2009.
PV Sindhu is the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the Olympics. After eliminating Wang Yihan and Japanese star Nozumi Okuhara in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively, only Spain’s Carolina Marin was left to win the ultimate prize. While she bowed down to Marin’s form in all three sets, her silver medal at Rio 2016 was nonetheless an immense achievement for the nation.
Sakshi Malik became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal when she won a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics in the 58 kg weight category.
In 2012, Mary Kom had risen to no.1 in the AIBA world rankings for a flyweight, and competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal after being beaten by eventual champion Nicola Adams.
Neeraj Chopra, having missed out on qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as an up and coming young athlete, will travel to the Tokyo Olympics as one of India's big hopes for a medal.
